Hair loss can be distressing, and understanding the root cause is essential for finding the right solution. There are multiple reasons why you could be experiencing such significant hair loss, including genetic factors, hormonal imbalances, nutritional deficiencies, or underlying health conditions. A good starting point would be some lab tests like a complete blood count (CBC), lipid profile, thyroid function tests, and perhaps a ferritin level test to assess for anemia or iron deficiency. Some people also benefit from checking for vitamin D and B12 levels. Depending on the results, the treatment may vary. For example, if iron deficiency is detected, iron supplementation might be recommended. Minoxidil is a common topical treatment for hair regeneration that works for many people, though patience is required since results can take a few months to observe. For men, finasteride is another medication often prescribed, though it carries its own set of considerations and potential side effects. Diet also plays a role, ensuring you’re consuming a balanced diet rich in protein, vitamins, and minerals that support hair health, like zinc and biotin, can be beneficial. Adjusting to healthier lifestyle habits such as reducing stress and avoiding harsh hair treatments can also help. If your hair loss is severe and doesn’t respond to initial treatments, consulting a dermatologist or a trichologist, who specializes in hair problems, would be advisable. Don’t delay in seeking professional advice if there are other alarming symptoms alongside the hair loss, as it may indicate a systemic issue that requires more urgent attention.
