How to tell if I have ring worm

A red, itchy circular patch on the skin, especially if you’re a wrestler and might have had contact with shared surfaces like a mat, could indeed be ringworm, also known as tinea. This fungal infection is characterized by a ring-shaped rash with a clearer center, which fits the description of a red circle that can be itchy and dry. While it could just be dry skin or a non-fungal irritation, the fact that you’re involved in close contact sports raises the possibility of ringworm given how contagious it is. To better determine if it’s ringworm, check if the spot is slightly raised and borders are more defined than just dry skin. Keep an eye on whether it spreads or if more patches appear.

If you suspect ringworm, an over-the-counter antifungal cream like clotrimazole or terbinafine can be applied to the affected area twice daily. It may take a few weeks to fully clear up, so consistency with the treatment is key. However, if the spot doesn’t improve after 1-2 weeks of treatment, or it worsens, visit a healthcare provider. They can confirm the diagnosis, possibly by inspecting it or doing a skin scraping. Meanwhile, ensure you clean any surfaces you come into contact with during your wrestling practice and avoid sharing personal items like towels. Until the area has visibly improved or is cleared, avoid wrestling to prevent transmission to others. Always make sure such issues are not spreading or worsening, as it could indicate a need for stronger prescription treatment.
