Acne is indeed common during teenage years due to hormonal changes, but that doesn’t mean you need to just wait for it to go away. There are effective treatments available that can help manage acne breakouts and reduce any marks they may leave behind. First, establishing a skincare routine is crucial. Use a gentle cleanser twice a day—morning and evening—to keep your skin clean without over-drying it. Consider over-the-counter products containing ingredients like benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid, which can help reduce acne by targeting bacteria and exfoliating the skin. However, if over-the-counter products aren’t doing the trick, it may be worth visiting a dermatologist, who can offer prescription options like topical retinoids or oral medications. For the dark marks, known as post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, using a product with ingredients like niacinamide or azelaic acid might be helpful, as these can reduce pigment production and aid skin lightening. Always apply sunscreen daily, as sun exposure can worsen these marks. Align any treatment with your skin type and other skincare products you may be using to avoid irritation. Improvements can be gradual, so consistency and patience are key. If you’re experiencing significant emotional distress because of acne or marks, or if over-the-counter measures don’t seem to help, it’s important to consult with a healthcare provider to explore more tailored treatment options.
