Itchy scalp with dandruff can be bothersome, but there are practical steps you can take to manage it. Dandruff often results from an overgrowth of a yeast-like fungus called Malassezia on the scalp, leading to flaking and itching. Start by using a medicated anti-dandruff shampoo containing active ingredients like zinc pyrithione, selenium sulfide, ketoconazole, or coal tar. Use this shampoo a few times a week; leave it on your scalp for about 5 minutes before rinsing thoroughly. Be cautious not to overwash your hair, as it can strip the scalp of natural oils, worsening the condition. In terms of diet, while specific foods don’t directly cause dandruff, a balanced diet rich in vitamins B6 and B12, zinc, and omega-3 fatty acids can promote overall scalp health. Avoid excessive sugars and processed foods as they might indirectly contribute to inflammation or hormonal imbalances affecting the scalp. Beyond shampoos, look at lifestyle factors: manage stress through relaxing activities since stress can exacerbate dandruff. Avoid using excessive styling products that can irritate the scalp or contribute to build-up. If your symptoms persist despite home treatments, consider seeing a healthcare provider or dermatologist to rule out other causes like psoriasis or eczema. Avoid scratching, as it can lead to scalp injury or infection. Finally, stay hydrated and consider readily available natural remedies such as applying tea tree oil or apple cider vinegar diluted with water, but do monitor for any irritation.
