How to get rid of Acne in scalp?

Nuren

I get lot of scalp acne, sometimes they don't bother me for a week or two, however, they come back. Sometimes, they're very painful other times it hurts when you touch it. I eat Indian food (less spicy) to avoid getting them, however, it comes back. I have a lot of pimple in my back too but they're not as painful as the scalp

Scalp acne, much like acne anywhere else on the body, is typically caused by a combination of excess oil production, clogged hair follicles, inflammation, and bacteria. While your diet, such as consuming less spicy food, can play a role in acne for some individuals, it might not be the sole factor here. To manage scalp acne effectively, consider starting with a medicated shampoo containing salicylic acid, zinc pyrithione, or ketoconazole, which can help in reducing dandruff and controlling oils that may contribute to acne. You should apply it 2-3 times a week, leaving it on the scalp for a few minutes before thoroughly washing it off.

Be cautious with your hair products; they should ideally be non-comedogenic (won’t clog pores) and free from heavy oils or alcohols that irritate the skin. If you notice certain products worsen your condition, try eliminating them. Maintaining a healthy hair-washing routine is important but avoid over-washing, as it might dry the scalp out and exacerbate oil production. Also, resist picking or scratching, as it can lead to infection or scarring. You should also try switching to a clean pillowcase regularly to minimize oil and bacteria.

Given the extent of the scalp and back acne, if these measures don’t improve the condition or if the acne becomes severely painful or widespread, it’s best to visit a dermatologist. Additional treatments such as topical or oral antibiotics or retinoids might be recommended based on your specific situation. If any acne develops into large, painful cysts or shows signs of infection like fever or pus, seek medical attention promptly.
