How to reduce diarrhea that has been for 2 months

Obsa

I had diarrhea and vomiting. I went to the hospital and they gave me this medicine, called 'Ephasol'. For 10 days, take 2 in the morning and 2 in the evening. Now, take 1 in the morning and 1 in the evening. Then, for 10 days, they told me to take only 1 in the morning and 1 in the evening. And when I finished taking the medicine, it came back. What should I do?

Doctors' responses

Persisting diarrhea for two months is indeed concerning and indicates that there’s possibly an underlying issue. First things first, it’s crucial to revisit the healthcare provider for a more thorough evaluation, possibly including stool tests, blood tests, or even imaging studies such as an ultrasound or colonoscopy if needed. This is essential as diarrhea persisting over such a long period could be due to a range of conditions from infections, inflammatory bowel disease, celiac disease, or even gastrointestinal disorders like IBS. It’s important not to ignore the symptoms, particularly if there’s any abdominal pain, blood in stools, or significant weight loss. In the meantime, maintain hydration as a priority. Drinking plenty of fluids is critical, preferably those containing electrolytes to prevent dehydration. Avoid caffeinated, sugary, or alcoholic beverages as they can make dehydration worse. Additionally, temporarily adhering to a bland diet might help—think along the lines of BRAT (Bananas, Rice, Applesauce, Toast); this can be easier on the digestive system. Consider also reviewing any recent changes in your diet, medications, or any stressful events that might be contributing factors. However, it is imperative that these suggestions are interim and seeing a healthcare professional is urgent to determine the exact cause and corresponding treatment. Ignoring or delaying professional consultation isn’t advisable due to potential complications.
