Doctors' responses

Considering your history of type 2 diabetes and the coronary stents you’ve had placed, managing your blood sugar levels effectively is crucial. The current medication regimen with Gliclazide Extended Release Tablets is aimed at maintaining blood glucose, particularly since Metformin doesn’t suit you. Monitoring these medications is important as your HbA1c is currently 8.0, a bit higher than the target range which typically aims for less than 7.0 to reduce the risk of diabetes-related complications. It might be worth discussing with your doctor whether re-initiating a low-dose insulin regimen could be beneficial should your glucose levels continue above target, particularly since you’ve reacted well to insulin in the past. As for your diet, focusing on foods with a low glycemic index (GI) can help manage blood sugar levels. Consider incorporating whole grains such as oats and barley, legumes like lentils and chickpeas, and non-starchy vegetables like leafy greens, tomatoes, and broccoli. Fruits that generally have a lower GI include berries, cherries, apples, and pears – these can be consumed in moderation. Make sure you’re including adequate fiber and balancing carbs with protein and healthy fats from sources like nuts and seeds. Avoid refined sugars, sugary drinks, and limit processed foods with high saturated fats. It may also help to keep your triglyceride levels low, given your cardiovascular history. It’s often beneficial to consult with a dietitian who can customize your diet plan according to your unique medical history and lifestyle. Regular follow-up with your healthcare provider is essential to reassess your treatment plan, especially if your blood sugar remains high or if any symptoms develop. Remember that lifestyle factors such as regular physical activity, stress management, and sleep all play roles in blood sugar regulation.
