To postpone your menstrual cycle, hormonal tablets like progesterone-only medications or combined oral contraceptives may be effective options. Norethisterone is a commonly used progesterone tablet for this purpose. You’d typically start taking it three days prior to your expected period onset. The typical dose is around 5 mg three times a day, and you’ll continue this for as long as you want to delay your period, within a safe timeframe. Note that once you stop taking the tablets, your period usually arrives within two to three days. It’s crucial to consult with a healthcare provider before starting, to confirm that this method is appropriate for you, as they’ll take into account your medical history and any potential contraindications. Combined oral contraceptives can also be used to postpone menstruation by skipping the placebo or pill-free week and going directly to the next pack, though this method requires prior use of this birth control. Health risks such as deep vein thrombosis, hypertension and other cardiovascular issues should be evaluated, especially if you’re a regular smoker, over 35, or have other risk factors. While these medications work for short-term postponement of menstruation, they might not be suitable for everyone due to their hormonal nature. Individual responses vary, and sometimes spotting or breakthrough bleeding can occur. Avoid using them for prolonged periods as it may disrupt hormonal balance. Engage your doctor to match the best option to your lifestyle and medical background for both efficacy and safety.
