Doctors' responses

1. Your hair fall is strongly linked to low hemoglobin. At 6.8 the hair roots are not getting enough oxygen and nutrition.

2. Oils and shampoos can only improve dryness but they cannot stop the actual cause of hair loss.

3. Focus on iron-rich foods like spinach, beetroot, dates, pomegranate, jaggery, eggs and lean meat along with your prescribed supplements.

4. It is also important to check vitamin B12, vitamin D and thyroid levels because they play a major role in hair health.

5. Please book a consultation with me so I can review your reports, guide you on the right diet plan and suggest safe medical options to stop hair fall and improve hair growth.

Significant hair loss combined with low hemoglobin levels often points towards nutritional deficiencies, particularly iron deficiency anemia, which is affecting the quality and health of your hair. Iron is essential for maintaining healthy hair follicles, so it’s important to improve your hemoglobin levels with an appropriate diet. Your diet should be rich in iron, vitamin C, and protein which are crucial for hair health. You can increase your iron intake by consuming more red meat, poultry, fish, beans, lentils, tofu, and dark leafy greens like spinach. Vitamin C can enhance iron absorption, so include citrus fruits, strawberries, and bell peppers in your meals. Proteins form the building blocks of hair, so eggs, fish, and soy products would be beneficial. Regularly including nuts and seeds like almonds and flaxseeds can provide essential fatty acids that improve hair texture. It’s also important to ensure you’re getting adequate folate and vitamin B12 from foods like fortified cereals, eggs, and dairy if you’re a vegetarian. While diet will make a difference, continue with the prescribed medication and follow up regularly with your doctor to monitor your hemoglobin levels and adjust treatment as necessary. The use of natural hair oils is good, but ensure you wash hair gently to reduce breakage. Avoid overly aggressive hairstyling or tight hairstyles that can exacerbate hair loss. It will take some time to see results from dietary adjustments, so being patient while maintaining these habits is key. Avoid self-medicating with over-the-counter iron supplements unless directed by a healthcare provider, as excess iron can be harmful. If you don’t notice any improvement or if hair loss worsens, a dermatologist or a specialist might need to evaluate other potential causes. You should have your iron levels regularly checked and adjust diet and supplements accordingly. Repeat blood work as recommended to avoid prolonged low hemoglobin, which can have further health consequences.
