Doctors' responses

1. A platelet count of 60,000 is significantly lower than normal (normal range is 1.5–4 lakh) and needs medical evaluation even if you are not feeling unwell.

2. Low platelets can occur due to viral infections like dengue, certain medicines, nutritional deficiencies, or blood-related conditions.

3. Sometimes people may not have symptoms initially but risk of bleeding increases when platelets are low.

4. You should repeat the test to confirm and get additional blood investigations as advised by a hematologist.

5. Avoid self medication, painkillers, or alcohol as these can further lower platelets.

6. Please consult a doctor immediately to find the cause and start proper treatment because early care prevents complications.

A platelet count of 60,000 is below the normal range and it’s important to consider the potential causes, even if you feel fine right now. Platelets are crucial for blood clotting, and low levels can be due to various reasons. Common causes include viral infections, such as dengue or viral hepatitis, but also certain medications or an underlying condition like immune thrombocytopenia (ITP). Sometimes, disorders affecting the bone marrow can affect platelet production as well. Certain nutritional deficiencies, such as low levels of vitamin B12 or folate, might also play a role, though less commonly at such low levels. If you’re not experiencing symptoms like unusual bruising, bleeding gums, or unusual fatigue, it becomes even more important to pinpoint any potential cause. This ensures that your count doesn’t decrease further without intervention. It’s generally advisable to follow up with a hematologist or your primary care provider to delve deeper into the cause. They might suggest additional tests, such as a peripheral blood smear or tests for specific viral markers. Considering lifestyle, avoid activities that might cause injury or bleeding, and perhaps avoid non-prescription medications like NSAIDs, which could worsen bleeding tendencies. While this count is low, it’s not emergently dangerous unless symptoms arise, so promptly getting a detailed assessment will be important to tackling the root cause and determining if treatment adjustment is necessary.
