Can we eat papaya in dengue?

Parth

I am really worried about my cousin who just got diagnosed with dengue. He's been feeling super weak, plus has a nasty fever and body aches. I heard from some friends and even read online that papaya leaves can be good for dengue patients, like helping increase platelet counts and all that. So, I’m thinking, can we eat papaya in dengue? Like, is it safe? He loves papaya, but I’m not sure if we should give him the fruit too. I mean, does it have the same benefits as the leaves? He’s been really picky with food lately, not eating much, so if he can have papaya, that might help him a bit more. I also read that sometimes certain foods can make symptoms worse, and I'm freaking out at the thought of making it worse for him. I guess what I'm really asking is whether eating papaya in dengue is actually helpful or could it interfere somehow. Should we stick just with the leaves, or what? I just want to make sure I'm doing the right thing for him since he really needs to get better soon. Any advice from anyone who knows about this?

Papaya as a fruit can be safely consumed by someone with dengue; it won’t cause harm and can be part of maintaining a balanced diet especially if your cousin is having trouble eating. It’s rich in vitamins A and C, fiber, and antioxidants that might help support general immune function, but it’s important to note that papaya fruit itself doesn’t specifically increase platelet counts or directly target dengue symptoms. The lore around papaya leaves, though, has gained some popularity. Some studies suggest their extract might help improve platelet counts in dengue patients, but the evidence is still limited and not conclusive. That being said, if your cousin enjoys papaya and it encourages him to eat more, that’s a positive aspect in and of itself, as staying nourished can aid overall recovery. It’s crucial, however, to ensure he stays well-hydrated, which is key in managing dengue effectively. Keep an eye on severe symptoms like persistent vomiting, bleeding, breathlessness, or intense abdominal pain, and seek immediate medical help if these occur as they can indicate a more severe form of dengue or possible complications. Ultimately, it’s best to discuss any use of papaya leaf extracts or dietary changes with his healthcare provider to avoid interactions with recommended treatments. Focus on keeping his nutrition varied and adequate to prevent exacerbating his weakness or condition.
