can we eat non veg in dengue

Simran

I am in a bit of a bind here, just got diagnosed with dengue and honestly, the last week has been a total mess. I’ve been feeling super weak, like, really tired and my joints hurt so much it's hard to move sometimes. Plus, I keep getting these high fevers, and I just started getting this rash which is super itchy. Anyway, my family is really worried about what to feed me while I'm recovering. We usually eat a lot of non-veg, you know? But, I keep hearing conflicting info about diet during dengue. Like, can we eat non veg in dengue? Some friends told me to avoid it entirely, saying it could make my symptoms worse or something, and I dunno if that's true. I mean, I feel like I could really use some protein to help me heal! But then again, I also feel scared that maybe non-veg would make my health even worse or slow my recovery? My mom is pushing for chicken soup since she thinks it’s good, but I’m still unsure if it does help or if I should stick to rice and veggies. Can we eat non veg in dengue or is it better to just not touch it at all? Any advice would help, because I feel lost right now, and just wanna get back to normal!

Doctors' responses

When you’ve got dengue, dietary choices can indeed feel confusing. The good news is that you don’t strictly need to avoid non-veg foods like chicken or fish during your recovery. They can actually be a helpful source of protein, which is important for maintaining strength and muscle mass and aiding recovery. Protein helps with cell repair and immune function, critical as your body fights off the viral infection. However, your body might be stressed by dengue, so focus on gentle, easily digestible options. Boiled or steamed chicken or fish is a good choice, as it’s easier on your stomach, compared to heavier or spicy preparations which might disrupt your digestive system. Stay clear of red meat for now—its higher fat content can be harder to digest, especially if you’re not feeling 100%.

Chicken soup, as your mom suggested, could actually be beneficial. It provides fluids, electrolytes, and nutrition without posing a digestive challenge. Hydration is crucial because dengue often comes with fever that can deplete body fluids, so alongside your meals, drink plenty of fluids like water, oral rehydration solutions, coconut water, or juices to avert dehydration. Relying solely on vegetables or rice might not give you the protein your body needs right now, but incorporating them with some chicken soup or fish can form a balanced diet. Remember, diverse nutrition is often key; include enough fruits and vegetables to supply vitamins and fiber, supporting overall health.

If the rash severe or you experience any alarming changes, such as prolonged vomiting, bleeding, or unremitting high fever, consult a healthcare provider promptly. Personalized care may be necessary if symptoms exacerbate or if you’re in a dengue-prone area, medical support is vital. Your strength will rebuild quicker when you listen to your body and respond to its needs, adjusting your diet according to your recovery pace.
