what to eat in dengue vegetarian

Nikhil

I am feeling super worried right now since my brother just got diagnosed with dengue. He’s been really sick and it’s been hard for the whole family. We’ve been looking into what to eat in dengue vegetarian since he's trying to stick to a plant-based diet. He’s dealing with fever, headaches, and that awful fatigue that comes with it, and I want to makesure he’s getting the right nutrients! I read a bit about needing to stay hydrated and getting some vitamins, but I’m confused about what to eat in dengue vegetarian. Like, should he be focusing on fruits and veggies, and if so, which ones are best? Coconut water seems good for hydration, right? What about soups or broths? Are there specific vegetarian foods he should totally avoid during this time? Also, should I be worried about preparing these meals, like how to ensure they're safe to eat without adding any risk? The more I read, the more I realize we need a solid plan. Any tips or advice on what to eat in dengue vegetarian would be super helpful right now. I'm just trying to help my brother heal!

Doctors' responses

For someone with dengue following a vegetarian diet, focusing on foods that boost immunity and assist with recovery is essential. First off, hydration is key. Coconut water is an excellent choice because it’s rich in electrolytes, which can help manage dehydration and replenish lost minerals. You might also want to include clear veg soups — make sure they are low in salt to avoid exacerbating any potential fluid retention. Broths made from vegetables can be soothing and provide much needed fluids too. Fruits such as papaya, rich in vitamin C, might help support the immune system; oranges and other citrus fruits can also be beneficial due to their antioxidant properties. Vegetables like spinach and kale are good options because they’re high in iron and other essential nutrients, which can support overall health during recovery.

Ensure the meals are freshly prepared and thoroughly cleaned — this reduces any risk of introducing additional infections, especially when the immune system is compromised. Steer clear of overly spicy foods or those that might be too complex to digest easily, as they might not be well-tolerated while he’s feeling unwell. Avoid caffeine and carbonated drinks as they can contribute to dehydration. Large meals that are heavy in fats or oils should also be avoided since they can be hard on the digestive system when one’s not feeling well. Preparing meals in small portions can make them more manageable and help ensure adequate energy intake throughout the day.

Additionally, be mindful of any red-flag symptoms that might warrant medical attention, like persistent vomiting, severe abdominal pain, or signs of bleeding (like blood in stool or severe pallor), as these could indicate a more serious progression of dengue. If these arise, seek immediate medical care. This balanced approach of maintaining proper hydration, opting for immune-supporting fruits and veggies, and being mindful of meal preparation, should help support your brother’s recovery.
