liver chronic disease

Dev

I am really worried about my dad, he’s been feeling super off lately, like way more tired than normal, and he keeps saying his stomach hurts but we thought it was just the pasta he scarfed down last night or somthing. But now I'm not so sure. He had some blood tests and the doc told us there are some signs of liver chronic disease. I mean, liver chronic disease sounds terrifying! What does that even mean?? The doctor mentioned something about elevated enzymes and possible cirrhosis but didn’t really explain it all well. We’re waiting for more tests, but I just can’t shake this feeling of dread. It’s so frustrating to not know exactly what’s going on and why this liver chronic disease could happen. Why would someone get liver chronic disease? My grandpa had some liver issues, so maybe it runs in the family. What can we do to help him? Are there diet changes or things we should avoid?? I feel totally lost on this whole liver chronic disease situation. Any advice or personal stories from people who have been though this would help a ton. Thanks in advance!

Doctors' responses

It sounds like your concerns are quite valid. When we talk about liver chronic disease, we’re generally referring to a condition that causes prolonged and progressive damage to the liver, potentially leading to cirrhosis, which is the scarring of the liver tissue. Elevated liver enzymes in your dad’s blood tests suggest liver inflammation or injury, which can be due to several factors. Common causes include chronic alcohol use, viral infections like hepatitis B or C, fatty liver disease often linked with obesity, and genetic conditions. Since your grandpa had liver issues, it could indeed suggest a hereditary predisposition, though lifestyle factors play a significant role too. In terms of what you can do now, it’s essential to work closely with your doctor’s recommendations while waiting for further tests. Diet can significantly impact liver health. Encourage your dad to adopt a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins, while reducing saturated fats and limiting salt and sugar intake. Avoiding alcohol is crucial because alcohol can exacerbate liver damage. Staying hydrated, managing weight, and regular physical activity are all beneficial. Your dad should also be cautious with over-the-counter medications and supplements, as some can have detrimental effects on the liver. Ensure that he is vaccinated against hepatitis A and B if not already done, to prevent additional strain on the liver. While waiting for more answers from medical tests, these lifestyle adjustments can support his liver health to an extent. Still, don’t hesitate to seek medical advice if new symptoms emerge or if his condition seems to worsen.
