home remedy for stomach upset

Shanaya

I am really at my wits end here with this stomach upset I’ve been having. It all started a few weeks ago after I went to this restaurant with some friends. I thought I was fine eating the curry special, but I woke up the next morning feeling like, ugh, like a truck hit me! Ever since then, I’ve been experiencing these awful cramps and sometimes I even feel nauseous after eating. I’ve tried some over-the-counter meds but they don’t seem to work. A friend mentioned using a home remedy for stomach upset, which kind of got me thinking. I read about things like ginger tea or peppermint, but honestly, I'm not sure what would actually be helpful. Are there any specific home remedies for stomach upset you guys could recommend? I really want to avoid feeling groggy from more meds if I can help it. Plus, I'm kinda sensitive to spicy food now, so whatever home remedy for stomach upset would need to be gentle! I’m also worried that I might have to change my diet completely if this keeps up. Any tips or personal insights about what’s actually worked for you would be super helpful! Thanks a ton!

Doctors' responses

Stomach upset after a particular meal could be due to various causes, such as food intolerances, infections, or even an excessive intake of spicy foods. The persistent symptoms you’re experiencing suggest it might be worth exploring some gentle home remedies alongside some dietary adjustments for better results. Let’s start with ginger, known for its anti-inflammatory properties and ability to soothe the digestive tract. You can make a simple ginger tea by slicing fresh ginger root and steeping it in boiling water for about 10 minutes; sip it slowly after meals to help with nausea and cramps. Peppermint could also be beneficial as it may relax gastrointestinal muscles and relieve bloating. Drinking peppermint tea or chewing on peppermint leaves could provide relief, but be cautious if you have acid reflux as it might exacerbate symptoms. Another option is chamomile tea, which can help with indigestion by reducing stomach upset and calming the digestive tract. When trying these remedies, consistency is key, and it’s best to use them right after eating or whenever you sense an upset coming. In terms of dietary changes, introducing bland foods like bananas, rice, applesauce, and toast (the BRAT diet) temporarily might stabilize your stomach. Avoid alcohol, caffeine, fatty, and spicy foods until symptoms settle. Also, keep hydrated by drinking enough water, but try to avoid drinking large amounts during meals as it can lead to further bloating. Remember, if symptoms persist or worsen, it’s essential to seek medical advice to rule out other conditions. With ongoing symptoms for a few weeks, it could be prudent to discuss further investigations with your doctor.a Red flags like blood in stool, unexplained weight loss, or severe pain would need immediate consultation. While home remedies can be soothing, they should complement medical evaluations to ensure no underlying issues are overlooked.
