can i eat egg in dengue

Atharv

I am really worried about my health right now. A few days ago, I was diagnosed with dengue fever. It hit me hard, like really hard. First, it started with high fever and then I got these awful body aches and fatigue. I haven't been able to keep much food down, and I've heard so many things about what I should and shouldn’t eat while dealing with dengue. I’ve noticed that my appetite is just not the same and everything feels so bland. Friends keep telling me to stay hydrated which I am trying to do, but I'm also wondering, can I eat egg in dengue? Like, I’ve always loved eggs, and they seem nutritious but I don’t know if they're safe right now. How important is protein and can I eat egg in dengue without making anything worse? I remember reading somewhere that some foods can worsen symptoms or something. I’m just super confused right now, and I really want to make sure I’m doing everything right so I can recover quickly. I’ve seen lists of food but mixed opinions everywhere, so can I eat egg in dengue or should I stick to bland stuff like rice? Any advice would really help me out!

Doctors' responses

Yes, you generally can eat eggs when you have dengue fever. Eggs are a great source of protein, which can be particularly beneficial during recovery as your body needs plenty of nutrients to help repair tissues and fight off the infection. Eating well-balanced meals that include protein supports maintaining strength and energy levels, especially when your body is working hard to recover from something like dengue. But listen to your body — since dengue can cause nausea or changes in taste, it’s important to eat foods you find palatable and that don’t upset your stomach. While dealing with dengue, emphasis on a light, nutritious diet is important. Besides eggs, you can include foods like chicken broth, fruits rich in vitamin C like oranges or papayas, and vegetables. These help by not only providing essential nutrients but aiding in overall hydration and antioxidant support. Maintaining hydration is indeed crucial, so keep drinking lots of fluids; water, coconut water, or sports drinks with electrolytes work well. Regarding your concern about foods worsening symptoms, generally speaking, there’s no evidence that eggs will do so, unless you find them difficult to digest personally. If you experience stomach discomfort, diarrhea, or any adverse symptoms after eating eggs, it would be wise to avoid them temporarily. Don’t ignore new symptoms like severe abdominal pain, vomiting, or bleeding, and if those occur, seek medical attention promptly. Remember to check with your healthcare provider for dietary guidance tailored to your specific needs and symptoms.
