loose motions food to eat

Aadhya

I am having a rough time with these loose motions and can't seem to figure out what to eat. It started a couple of days ago after I tried this new street food that everyone was raving about. I seriously thought it was amazing, but then boom! The next morning was just chaos in my stomach. I’ve been to the loo like 10 times today and I'm feelin’ drained. A friend of mine suggested some home remedies but honestly, I really don’t know what would be safe to eat while I'm dealing with these loose motions. I tried toast and bananas, but still feeling iffy. I read somewhere that rice might help too, but does white rice really do anything for loose motions? It’s confusing because I’ve heard mixed things about dairy products, like yogurt could be good but I’m kinda scared to try it with everything going on. What are some foods that I can eat that won't make the situation worse? Are there specific things to avoid or anything that really helps when having loose motions? Seriously, I just want to feel normal again! Could really use some advice here, thanks!!

Doctors' responses

When you’re experiencing loose motions, focusing on foods that can help firm up stools and avoid anything that might irritate your digestive system is essential. Starting with what you can eat: the BRAT diet (bananas, rice, applesauce, and toast) is typically recommended because these foods are bland, easy to digest, and can help firm up your stools. White rice is actually quite effective because it’s binding, meaning it can help reduce diarrhea. Bananas are a good choice too; they provide pectin, which can help absorb water in the intestines, easing symptoms. Applesauce is gentle on the stomach, but avoid fresh apples as they can worsen diarrhea. As for yogurt, it contains probiotics that might help restore the gut flora balance, though it’s crucial to avoid those with added sugars.

Definitely steer clear of dairy products like milk and cheese if you’re unsure how your body will react, as they can worsen symptoms for some people with temporary lactose intolerance during digestive upsets. Avoid raw fruits and vegetables that can be harsh on your digestive tract, as well as sugary, spicy, or greasy foods. Caffeine and alcohol are best omitted too, as they can irritate the gut lining. Stay well hydrated with water, clear broths, or an oral rehydration solution if dehydration is a concern, given your frequent trips to the loo. Coconut water is also a great option for rehydration.

If your symptoms don’t improve in a couple of days, become severe, or if you notice signs of dehydration such as dry mouth, extreme thirst, or reduced urination, it’s important to seek medical attention as these could be signs of something more serious. Also, pay attention to any other symptoms that develop, like fever or blood in stools, as they warrant a healthcare provider’s assessment. For most people dealing with loose motions, following these dietary recommendations should provide some relief, but please reach out to a healthcare provider for personal advice if things don’t seem to improve.
