for how many days viral fever lasts

Raghav

I am curious about viral fever because my little brother just got hit with it and I'm really worried. He started having really high fevers, like above 102°F, and it came out of nowhere. First, he was just a bit tired and then wham! The next day, he was sweating buckets and just laying around like a limp noodle. I took him to the doctor, and they said it’s probably a viral fever. But now I’m wondering, for how many days viral fever lasts? They said it could be anywhere from a few days to maybe a week, but how do they know? It’s been four days now and he’s still got a fever that won't budge! Should I be panicking? I read online that viral fever can last a while, which isn’t super comforting. His other symptoms include this horrible headache and minor sore throat — oh, and he’s been super cranky! It’s hard to see him like this. Just trying to gauge if we’re nearing the end of this awful viral fever or if I should be expecting it to drag on longer! What do you think, for how many days viral fever lasts? Any tips on signs to watch for or when to call the doc again?

Doctors' responses

Viral fever typically lasts about 3 to 7 days, with the fever usually peaking and then gradually declining. It might be a little reassuring that you’re in this timeframe, but I understand it’s still worring when it seems relentless. How long this fever stays depends on the specific virus involved and your brother’s own immune response. You mentioned he’s been feverish for four days now; this is still within the average range, but you are right to keep an eye on it. If the fever persists beyond 7 days, it’s a good idea to follow up with the doctor.

In terms of management, ensure he’s staying well-hydrated, drinking plenty of fluids like water or oral rehydration solutions, which are crucial as fever can cause dehydration. Encourage adequate rest to help his body fight off the virus. Using over-the-counter medications like acetaminophen or ibuprofen can help manage his fever and alleviate headaches, but these should be used following dosing guidelines or doctors recommendations.

Signs to watch for that may require more immediate attention include very high persistent fever (especially above 104°F), difficulty breathing, confusion, excessive drowsiness, or if he’s not drinking fluids. If any of these occur, or his symptoms worsen or don’t improve, it’s important to consult a healthcare professional to rule out any possible complications or secondary infections, like bacterial infections, which may require different treatment approaches. The important thing is to stay vigilant while understanding that while viral fevers can be tough, they are usually self-limiting and resolve with supportive care over time.
