lemon peel side effects

Kian

I am having this weird issue after I started using lemon peel in my cooking and teas, like I thought it would be super healthy but I feel strange. I started adding lemon peel thinking it would just boost flavor and maybe even help digestion but I've been getting some weird stomach cramps and just feeling off in general. Sometimes it feels like my stomach is in knots, and I didn’t connect it at first but I think it’s after I’ve consumed lemon peel! I’ve looked up lemon peel side effects and there are some stuff about allergies, and while I don't know if I have one, I do get this itchy throat sometimes, but I thought it was just seasonal allergies or something. Also, I've read that lemon peel side effects can include gas and upset stomach but it didn’t hit me until now. I’m kinda freaking out, like am I reacting to lemon peel or is it something else?! My friends said it’s super healthy and good for detox, but if lemon peel side effects are this bad for me, should I just stop using it altogether? Anyone else felt this way or is it just me? Would love some insight on what I should do next!

Doctors' responses

It’s possible that the symptoms you’re experiencing could be related to the lemon peel you’ve been incorporating into your diet. Lemon peel is rich in fiber, antioxidants, and certain essential oils that can indeed offer health benefits, but it can also cause digestive discomfort for some individuals, particularly if consumed in large quantities. The oils in lemon peel, primarily d-limonene, can sometimes be irritating to the stomach or intestines, especially if one is sensitive or allergic. The itchy throat you’re experiencing could also be indicative of a mild allergic reaction to compounds in the peel. Lemon peel is known to sometimes cause mild gastrointestinal issues such as gas, cramps, or upset stomach in sensitive individuals, especially if consumed in amounts greater than typical culinary use. It’s important to consider whether these symptoms consistently appear after you’ve ingested lemon peel; if so, this could suggest a possible connection and it may be best to avoid it for now. A practical step would be to eliminate lemon peel from your diet temporarily and observe if your symptoms improve. If they do, you might have pinpointed the cause. It’s always recommended to consult with a healthcare provider, especially if the symptoms are persistent or concerning. They might suggest allergy testing to rule out or confirm a food allergy. Trust your body’s signals, and if something doesn’t feel right, it probably deserves attention. Meanwhile, ensure you stay hydrated and monitor any new symptoms. If you experience severe symptoms like difficulty breathing or intense abdominal pain, seek medical attention promptly. Remember, just because a food item is labeled as “healthy” or “detoxifying” doesn’t mean it’s suitable for everyone. Your personal health should always be the top priority, even in the face of popular health trends.
