ways to keep kidney healthy

Swara

I am really worried about my kidney health lately. I've been feeling super fatigued, and I noticed some swelling in my ankles. My family has a history of kidney issues, which has got me thinking a lot about ways to keep kidney healthy. I mean, I’m trying to eat better, but sometimes, it’s hard to resist junk food, ya know? I read somewhere that drinking more water is one of the essential ways to keep kidney healthy, but I often forget to stay hydrated during the day. Just last week, I had some tests done, and my doctor said my creatinine levels were a bit high, which freaked me out! I've also been trying to cut back on salt, but sometimes I just don’t know what to do, especially when I eat out. Are there easy ways to keep kidney healthy that don’t involve drastic changes? Like, are there any specific foods I should focus on or maybe some supplements? I really want to take action before things get worse, but it’s tough to keep track of everything! Any tips would help, even if they’re small ways to keep kidney healthy that I can incorporate into my daily routine. Thanks!

When it comes to maintaining kidney health, there are several practical steps you can incorporate into your daily routine. Staying hydrated is indeed important, as it helps kidneys clear sodium and toxins from the body, but it doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Try keeping a water bottle with you throughout day, setting small goals like drinking a glass of water every hour or after every meal. This way, it becomes part of your routine rather than a chore. Reducing sodium intake is another key factor. Since eating out poses a challenge, you might consider asking for dishes with less salt or sauce on the side to have better control over your sodium intake. At home, using herbs and spices to flavor meals can be a good tasty alternative to salt. A diet that includes plenty of fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins can support kidney health. Dark leafy greens, berries, apples, and fatty fish like salmon are great choices. Limiting processed foods and high-fat meats can also help reduce kidney strain. As for supplements, it’s best to get nutrients primarily through diet unless your doctor recommends specific ones, as some supplements can actually harm your kidneys if not used correctly. Regular physical activity, like walking or cycling, can improve kidney function too. Since you have a family history of kidney problems, regular check-ups to monitor your kidney function are essential. High creatinine levels can signal decreased kidney function, so it’s crucial to follow up with your healthcare provider about the results. They might suggest more specific dietary modifications or further testing depending on your individual needs. By making gradual changes, you’re less likely to feel overwhelmed and you’re more likely to stick with a routine that supports your kidneys in the long term.
