natural ways to detox liver

Shivansh

I am looking for some advice on natural ways to detox liver, 'cause lately, I've been feeling really sluggish and just not myself. A couple weeks ago, after indulging in some heavy party food and probably too much wine during the holidays, I noticed my energy plummeting. My skin seems to be breaking out, and I can't tell if it's related or just bad luck. I've tried drinking more water like everyone says, but honestly, it feels like it’s not enough. I talked to my friend, who was raving about natural ways to detox liver, and she mentioned things like dandelion tea and maybe some herbal supplements, but I don't know where to start. I even thought about cutting out sugar and dairy, but that seems overwhelming and I really love cheese. Do you guys think there are easier natural ways to detox liver that won't make me feel like I'm going on some crazy diet? Also, how long does it usually take to see any changes? I've read all these conflicting things online, and I'm just lost. Like, am I supposed to see a doctor about this, or could some natural ways to detox liver actually help? Just feeling really confused, and any tips would be super helpful.

Doctors' responses

Feeling sluggish and having skin breakouts can certainly be frustrating, especially post-holidays, but it’s great you’re looking into ways to support your liver health. First, it’s essential to understand that the liver is a resilient organ that naturally detoxes your body. While there’s no need for extreme diets, the concept of “detoxing” can be more about supporting the liver’s natural functions with healthy habits. Drinking more water is a good start since hydration helps flush out toxins through the kidneys and supports overall well-being. When it comes to diet, consider gradually introducing foods like leafy greens (e.g., spinach, kale), cruciferous vegetables (like broccoli, cauliflower), and citrus fruits, which are known to support liver functions.

While cutting out sugar and dairy isn’t strictly necessary, reducing processed foods and alcohol can significantly lessen the liver’s workload. Dandelion tea is often touted for liver support due to its diuretic effect, which can help with detoxification. Similarly, milk thistle is a herb commonly used for liver support, as it contains silymarin, an antioxidant. When it comes to supplements, however, it’s critical to approach them with caution and ideally consult with a healthcare provider first, as they can interact with medications or have other contraindications.

Cast aside the idea of quick fixes; lifestyle changes should focus on long-term habits rather than immediate results. You might begin feeling benefits in energy levels and skin appearance within a few weeks, but it varies per individual. If symptoms persist or worsen, consider visiting a healthcare provider to rule out other underlying conditions. They can assess whether additional investigations or treatments are warranted and guide you on safe health practices. Avoid falling for unsupported detox myths—rather, focus on balanced nutrition, adequate rest, and regular physical activity to bolster your overall health, including your liver.
