hyperpigmentation around nose

Rian

I am really worried about this hyperpigmentation around my nose that just showed up outta nowhere, like seriously! I've never had any skin issues before and now there are these dark spots. It's frustraiting!! I don't know if it's from sun exposure or maybe somthing I tried on my face but I can't remember putting anything new. The worse part is, I noticed this hyperpigmentation around my nose about a month ago, and I thought it would go away but it feels like it’s getting darker! I tried using some over-the-counter creams that claim to help with hyperpigmentation but like, I’m seeing no results. Am I doing something wrong? I’ve read stuff online about how things like vitamin C serums could help with hyperpigmentation around the nose. Is that true? Should I see a dermatologist or something? I've also been a bit stressed lately which I heard could affect skin too. Ugh, it's just super annoying seeing this hyperpigmentation around my nose every time I look in the mirror. Has anyone else dealt with this?? What worked for you??

Doctors' responses

Hyperpigmentation around the nose can indeed be a bit of a nuisance, but let’s disentangle what’s likely going on. Since it’s been about a month, it might be worth investigating if something changed in your routine or environment recently—like a skincare product, more sun exposure, or even hormonal changes. Stress, as you mentioned, could also exacerbate skin issues as it affects your body’s overall response, potentially aggravating pigmentation disorders due to increased cortisol levels. To address the hyperpigmentation, continuing with over-the-counter treatments can be effective, but they do take time. Products containing ingredients like vitamin C, kojic acid, niacinamide, or azelaic acid can help lighten the spots. Vitamin C serums, indeed, are known for their brightening and depigmenting properties, so incorporating one into your routine might be beneficial. However, ensuring that you’re consistent with daily use and sun protection during the day is crucial, as sunlight can worsen pigmentation over time. Always apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30, even on cloudy days to prevent further darkening. Also, try to avoid any scratching or picking at your skin, as this can lead to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Consulting a dermatologist could be a wise next step if things don’t improve or worsen. They can help determine if a prescription-strength treatment is needed—perhaps with hydroquinone or other targeted agents. In-office treatments like chemical peels or laser therapy might also be options, depending on the severity and underlying cause. Schedule an appointment especially if you notice any changes in texture, bleeding, or if it’s not responding to typical self-care measures; these could be signs of something more serious. Meanwhile, keeping stress levels in check through practices like mindfulness or regular physical activity can also have positive effects on both your skin and overall wellbeing. Ultimately, balancing a consistent skincare regimen with professional guidance, if necessary, will likely offer the best path forward.
