liver in which side

Nisha

I am really confused about something and hope someone can help me out. A few weeks ago, I started feeling this weird pain in my abdomen, and at first, I thought it was just something I ate. But then it got a bit worse and I saw my doc, right? They mentioned the liver in our convo. I mean, I guess I always thought the liver in which side was over there on the right, but I started questioning myself after that appointment. The pain is more on my upper right side, but sometimes it kinda feels like it’s radiating. I had some blood tests done, and they said my liver enzymes were a bit elevated or something, and that freaked me out! I'm trying to make sense of it all because this pain just isn't letting up. If the liver in which side is indeed on the right, how do I know if it’s actually related to my liver or if it could be something else? Should I be looking for other symptoms? And are there certain lifestyle changes I need to make to protect my liver health? I'm just scared because I've heard a lot about liver issues, and I don’t want to ignore it. Anyone been through this? What do you think could be going on?

Doctors' responses

The liver is indeed located on the right side of your abdomen, just under your rib cage. Given your description, it’s reasonable to consider that your symptoms could be related to liver activity, especially since you’ve mentioned elevated liver enzymes. This doesn’t necessarily mean something is seriously wrong, but it’s a signal from your body to pay attention. Liver pain typically presents as a dull ache in the upper right part of your abdomen, but increased pressure or liver inflammation can sometimes cause referred pain or discomfort in surrounding areas. It’s important to look out for other symptoms that may indicate liver problems, like jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes), dark urine, pale stools, chronic fatigue or unexplained weight loss.

In terms of what to do next, following up with your healthcare provider to interpret your liver enzyme levels is essential. Sometimes elevated liver enzymes are caused by relatively benign reasons such as mild liver inflammation or certain medications, while other times they could signal a more severe condition like hepatitis, fatty liver disease, or even cirrhosis. Depending on the results and potential causes, lifestyle changes can significantly impact your liver health. Avoiding alcohol, eating a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains, and maintaining a healthy weight are generally advised. Also, limiting processed foods, red meats, and added sugars can be beneficial. Regular exercise and staying hydrated are simple, effective ways to support overall liver function. However, if the pain persists or you notice any additional concerning symptoms, it’s important to get re-assessed by a healthcare professional who might recommend further imaging tests like an ultrasound or a CT scan to get a clearer picture of what’s going on. Blood work, such as liver function tests, is also critical. You should seek immediate medical attention if symptoms escalate or new concerning signs appear. Remember, it’s crucial to address things promptly, since overlooking liver dysfunction can lead to complications over time.
