how to use olive oil for hair

Kashvi

I am really trying to figure out how to use olive oil for hair, and honestly, I've read a ton of stuff online but nothing seems to match what I'm experiencing. Last month, I got my hair colored for the first time in ages, and now it's feelin super dry and kinda brittle. I keep hearing people rave about olive oil, like, how to use olive oil for hair in different ways—like should I apply it directly or mix it with something? One article said to heat it up, but I’m scared of frying my strands. Also, would it be better to do this before or after washing my hair? I tried putting it on overnight once, but it was just a sticky mess and I was worried it would make my scalp oily too. My friend said that she uses it as a leave-in conditioner, but how to use olive oil for hair that way? Like can I just put a bit on the ends or does it need to be more extensive? And what about those split ends? Should I focus on just the tips or cover the whole length too? I’ve seen some videos, but they make it look way too easy! Any tips from you guys on how to use olive oil for hair without turning it into a greasy situation would be awesome. I just really want my hair to feel healthy again, not all crunchy and dry… ugh! Thanks a mil!

Using olive oil for your hair can indeed be a helpful approach, especially if you’re dealing with dryness after coloring, but it’s important to apply it in a way that avoids making your hair greasy or sticky. First, choose extra virgin olive oil, as it is the least processed and more nutrient-rich. To use olive oil as a hair treatment, start by warming a small amount, like 1-2 tablespoons, gently in your hands or in a small bowl. You don’t want it hot, just lukewarm, as this can help your hair absorb it better. If you’re concerned about greasiness, start by applying it only to the mid-lengths and ends of your hair—these are typically the parts that need the most moisture, especially if they’ve been colored.

Before washing your hair, apply the oil and massage it in for a few minutes. Leave it on for about 30 minutes. You can cover your hair with a shower cap to prevent mess and allow the oil to penetrate more deeply. Once the time’s up, shampoo and condition as usual to rinse the oil out. You might need two rounds of shampooing, depending on your hair type, to ensure there’s no residue left. It’s generally best to do this treatment once a week to avoid overloading your hair with oil.

Alternatively, for a lighter approach, you can use a few drops of olive oil as a leave-in conditioner. Just rub a small amount between your palms and apply it lightly to the ends of your hair, steering clear of the roots. This can help manage split ends without making the scalp oily. As for focusing on split ends specifically, applying a bit more oil on the tips may improve their appearance and prevent further damage temporarily, but remember that only trimming can truly remove split ends. If you notice increased dryness or brittleness despite using olive oil, it may be beneficial to consult with a professional stylist or dermatologist, as they can provide more tailored advice or suggest other treatment options.
