how to use henna for hair

Sia

I am really trying to find out how to use henna for hair because I’ve been hearing so many good things about it. A couple of weeks ago, I decided to give my hair some extra care, but I haven’t quite figured out the whole henna process. Last month, I dyed my hair and it ended up looking super harsh and not what I wanted at all, so I want to try something more natural. My friend swears by henna and she has this beautiful rich color, plus she said it’s really good for your scalp, too. Honestly, I'm not even sure how to mix it right or how long to leave it in. Do I need to add anything to the henna powder?!! And, what about rinsing it out afterward? Will it stain my skin if I get some on my hands? I heard that henna can be kind of messy, which makes me nervous considering my bathroom is kinda small. I keep thinking about trying this out, but if I mess it up, I might just stick with my usual. Can someone who knows how to use henna for hair share some tips or a step-by-step or something? Like, how to prepare the henna and how I can get the best results without ruining my hair again? Thanks for any help!!

Starting with henna can feel a bit daunting but it’s honestly not too complicated once you know the basics. First, choose a good quality henna powder, preferably body art quality, as this will generally be of higher purity. Wearing gloves is important, because henna can stain your skin temporarily, and yes, it does get messy sometimes. To mix the henna, you’ll want to start with adding some water or tea to the powder—it should have a consistency similar to pancake batter, neither too thick nor too runny. Some people add a bit of lemon juice or vinegar, but this step is optional and based on personal preference. Let the prepared mix sit for about 6 to 8 hours, or overnight if you prefer, because this allows the dye to release properly. It’s essential that you don’t skimp on this waiting time.

When you’re ready to apply it, make sure your hair is clean and dry. Start applying the henna paste from the roots to the tips, section by section, using a brush or your gloved hands to ensure it’s evenly covered. Then, wrap your hair in plastic wrap or wear a shower cap to keep the paste moist and to prevent dripping. Let it sit for about 2 to 4 hours, depending on how deep you want the color and how much time you have. Some folks even leave it on longer.

As for rinsing, use a lot of water to wash the henna out thoroughly—it can take quite a few rinses until the water runs clear. Avoid using shampoo right away; instead, you might want to condition your hair afterwards to restore some softness. The color might seem a little bright at first, but it will deepen over the next few days. Remember to do a patch test ahead of time, as allergic reactions, though rare, can occur. This is especially relevant if you’ve been experiencing any scalp issues or have a sensitive skin. Also, henna has a range of properties that can benefit your hair health by effectively conditioning it and even improving scalp health, which might be why your friend has seen improvements. If you’re hesitant, you could start with a small strand test to be sure you’re happy with the outcome before going for a full application.
