how to cure liver damage

Om

I am really confused and kinda scared because my doctor told me I might have some liver damage. During my last checkup, they mentioned elevated enzymes and suggested that I cut back on alcohol and fatty foods. Honestly, I’ve been feeling pretty tired and I've had some weird stomach pains, which always make me wonder if this liver damage thing is serious or not. I started doing some research on how to cure liver damage and saw everything from adopting healthier diets to trying supplements. But like, where do I even start? I've tried to eat better but sometimes I just fall back into old habits. It’s hard when I'm out with friends or at work. Can someone explain how to cure liver damage in a way that makes sense for someone who struggles with lifestyle changes? Are there specific foods that really help? Also, do I need to do anything else besides changing my diet, like exercise or avoiding certain meds? I just want to know if there’s a clear plan or something to follow. I really need to take this seriously, but it feels overwhelming. Any advice would help!

Doctors' responses

Starting with the basics, liver damage can be managed and sometimes even reversed depending on the cause and extent of the damage. Elevated liver enzymes can indicate inflammation or damage, often from alcohol, fatty liver, or medications. Your doctor’s advice to cut back on alcohol and fatty foods is critical. Alcohol is a major liver toxin, and fatty foods can contribute to fatty liver disease, so reducing these can significantly help. For food, focus on a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats like those from nuts and olive oil. Avoid processed foods, high sugar foods, and trans fats. Hydration is also key; ensure you’re drinking plenty of water during the day.

Exercise is another important aspect. Regular physical activity, aiming for at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise per week, can help reduce liver fat and improve overall health. Even walking or light jogging can be beneficial. As for supplements, milk thistle is sometimes mentioned, but strong clinical evidence supporting its efficacy for liver repair is limited. It’s better to focus on proven lifestyle changes before considering supplements.

Avoid self-medicating or using over-the-counter drugs excessively (like acetaminophen), as these can exacerbate liver issues. Always consult your healthcare provider before starting any new supplements or medications.

In social settings where temptations are high, try sticking to club soda or non-alcoholic options and choose healthier dishes. Gradual changes are often more sustainable than drastic overhauls. Remember, you don’t have to make all these changes overnight, and it might be worth considering professional help from a dietitian for tailored advice. Regular follow-up with your physician is important to monitor progress and make adjustments as needed. If symptoms worsen or if there are new concerns, such as jaundice or severe pain, seek medical attention promptly. This plan can help guide you to a healthier liver and overall well-being.
