how to reduce black circles under eyes

Manvi

I am really struggling with these black circles under my eyes! It’s been months and I can’t seem to shake them off, like I seriously look like a raccoon sometimes, and it’s embarrassing. I went to my doc a few weeks ago, and they said it could be lack of sleep or something. I tried sleeping more, but honestly, the black circles under my eyes haven’t budged. Stress is also a huge issue with work piling up but I didn’t think that would cause that much trouble. I've tried a bunch of creams and even chilled cucumber slices, haha, but nothing seems to help. And then, I started thinking maybe it’s allergies or something like that? I don’t know. I also drink plenty of water but still dealing with these stubborn black circles under my eyes. Sometimes they look worse than others, and I feel like it’s making me look older than I am, which is so frustrating! I really want to know how to reduce black circles under eyes effectively. What do you guys recommend? Any tips or remedies that actually work? Would love to get some advice from other experiences!

Doctors' responses

Dark circles under the eyes can be quite annoying, and yes, they can be caused by several factors beyond just lack of sleep. You mentioned stress and allergies as possible causes – both can contribute significantly to the appearance of dark circles. Allergies can cause congestion, leading to puffiness and discoloration of the skin around your eyes. Trying an over-the-counter antihistamine might help if you suspect allergies, and definitely consider speaking to your doctor about longer-term options. You’re doing well with staying hydrated; dehydration can sometimes exacerbate the appearance of these circles. Iron deficiency is another possibility to consider. Make sure you’re getting enough of it in your diet, either through food sources like red meat, beans, and fortified cereals or possibly an iron supplement—just be sure to consult with a healthcare professional before starting any supplements. On top of sleep and hydration, protect your skin from the sun. Use a good sunscreen around your eyes every morning, regardless of the weather; this prevents further hyperpigmentation. Retinoid creams, though, are more long-term solutions, showing results over weeks rather than days. They improve collagen production, helping to thicken the skin and reduce the appearance of veins under your eyes. Using products with vitamin C can also help to some extent, as it reduces pigmentation. A cold compress can help temporarily in reducing puffiness, which might diminish their appearance as well. Try holding a cold, damp cloth over your eyes for a few minutes – this can be quite comforting. If these circles persist despite these self-management strategies, it’s also worthwhile considering consulting a dermatologist or a healthcare provider specializing in skin conditions. They might discuss procedures like laser therapy or fillers that can yield more significant improvements for some people. It’s all about finding the right balance of approaches tailored to the unique factors causing your circles.
