Without enough of these electrolytes, the body can become weak and parts of it may not function as needed, which is why ORS is important. It contains the right amount of sugar and salts to help a child’s body absorb fluid more effectively than plain water. Since he’s being a bit picky and sticks to juice sometimes, there’s a few tricks you might try. To encourage him to drink ORS, you can give it in small sips often or use fun straws and cups. Mixing ORS with a little bit of his favorite, not-too-sugary juice (but not cola or carbonated drinks) might also help; just be cautious not to dilute it too much or its effectiveness diminishes. Additionally, keeping the solution cool in the fridge makes it more palatable for some kids. Another tip is encouraging him to take small frequent sips over a longer period instead of trying to get him to drink a large amount at once. Always check for signs of severe dehydration, like very dry mouth or decreased urine output, and if you see those, it’s best to seek medical care promptly.
