Hello

The blood could be coming from small irritated blood vessels in the throat due to a viral infection, forceful coughing, or throat inflammation. However, because you have recurrent bleeding from the throat (this happened in December as well) plus new sharp chest pain, it is important not to assume it is just a cold.

You should be examined today by a doctor or at an urgent care/emergency department. A clinician may need to examine your throat and chest and decide whether you need tests such as a chest X-ray, ECG, blood tests, or referral to an ENT specialist if the bleeding is coming from the throat.

In the meantime:

* Drink plenty of fluids and rest. * Gargle with warm salt water 3–4 times daily. * Take paracetamol (acetaminophen) for pain if appropriate. * Avoid smoking, alcohol, spicy foods, and frequent throat clearing. * If you are coughing, try to cough gently and avoid straining.

Go to the emergency department immediately if:

* You cough up more than a few streaks of blood or the bleeding continues. * Chest pain becomes severe, lasts more than a few minutes, or is associated with shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or pain spreading to the arm, jaw, or back. * You develop difficulty breathing, difficulty swallowing, a high fever, or repeated vomiting.

Because this is the second episode of throat bleeding and it is now accompanied by chest pain, an in-person evaluation is necessary today to determine the exact cause.

Take care Feel free to reach out again

Given the symptoms you’re describing—throat pain, blood in the throat, and sharp chest pain—it’s crucial to consider a few potential underlying issues. Blood in the throat combined with these other symptoms could arise from several causes, ranging from a simple upper respiratory tract infection to something more concerning, like a peptic ulcer or a more significant condition involving your respiratory or gastrointestinal tract. The chest pain, especially if it’s sharp and comes and goes, should not be ignored, as it may suggest something like a costochondritis or even a cardiac-related condition, although these are less common at your age without significant risk factors. It’s important to get evaluated sooner rather than later. You should see a healthcare provider as soon as possible to have your throat and chest evaluated. Especially concerning is the blood you noticed—this warrants a thorough examination, possibly including tests such as a chest X-ray or endoscopy depending on your provider’s assessment. Until you can see a doctor, monitor your symptoms. Note things like frequency and severity of the chest pain, any worsening of the throat pain, additional symptoms like fever, and whether over-the-counter remedies such as anti-inflammatories help with your throat pain. Try to hydrate well, limit irritants like smoking or alcohol, and avoid very spicy or hard foods that may exacerbate the throat pain. If your chest pain becomes constant, worsens, or is accompanied by symptoms like dizziness or difficulty breathing, seek medical attention immediately. Safety and prompt evaluation are priorities here, as some causes could require urgent attention to prevent complications.
