how to care eye flu

Pari

I am really worried about my eyes right now, I think I might have caught this thing called eye flu. I mean, it just started a few days ago, but first, I thought it was just allergies or maybe tiredness from working all those late nights staring at screens? Anyway, I’ve got this itching, watery red eyes and it feels like there’s something stuck in them—super annoying! I went to the doc and they kinda confirmed my fears, said it could be eye flu. But what I am really confused about is how to care eye flu. Like, what can I do at home to ease the symptoms? I was told to apply some warm compresses, but how long should I do that for? And what about eye drops? Are there good ones for eye flu or should I just stick to basic saline? Also, I read somewhere that staying away from screens might help, but that’s tough because of my job. I don’t want to make it worse! Can anyone share some tips or experiences on how to care eye flu? I just need to feel normal again, you know? Thanks in advance for any guidance, really appreciate it!

Doctors' responses

Eye flu, commonly known as viral conjunctivitis, can definitely be bothersome but there are some practical steps you can take right at home to manage it. First, regarding warm compresses, they’re indeed helpful—it can soothe the eyes by improving circulation and reducing irritation. You might apply them a few times a day for about 5-10 minutes each time. Just ensure the cloth is clean to prevent any potential infection. Hygenic practice is key here. Regarding eye drops, saline ones are good for lubrication and to rinse out any irritants. Avoid over-the-counter drops that promise to ‘get the red out’ as they can sometimes worsen the symptoms; just stick to basic saline for now. If your eyes are really itchy, ask your doctor about antihistamine or decongestant drops specifically formulated for eye flu symptoms. Minimizing screen time is indeed beneficial because screens can exacerbate symptoms by causing eyestrain and reducing blink rate, which worsens dryness and irritation. Since you’re spending a lot of time in front of a screen for work, try the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds to help reduce strain. Also, remember to wash your hands frequently and avoid touching your eyes to limit the spread of the virus. Finally, ensure you’re using your own towels and pillowcases and wash them often to avoid spreading the infection to others or reinfecting yourself. If your symptoms worsen or you notice any changes in your vision, it’s crucial to follow up with your doctor promptly. Always prioritize hygiene and rest to speed up recovery.
