dengue patient food

Aisha

I am feeling really worried because my brother was just diagnosed with dengue and I don't know what food is safe for him to eat. He started with a high fever, then some really bad joint pains, and now they're saying he's a dengue patient. The doctors are giving us advice, but it's kind of conflicting. Some say he should just stick to clear fluids, while others mention he can have food too, but what kind? We have some soup and bland rice at home, is that good for a dengue patient? I heard that certain foods might actually help, like fruits, but then again, I read somewhere that some can be harmful too. He hasn’t eaten much since he got sick, and I'm worried about his strength. Does anyone have tips on what are ideal foods for a dengue patient? Should we avoid any particular food groups? He’s not vomiting or anything, just really weak, and I just want to make sure he gets the right nutrition. What foods have helped others who’ve been dengue patients? Am I freaking out too much or is it really important for him to eat specific foods while he's recovering?

Doctors' responses

When someone is diagnosed with dengue, nutrition can play a critical role in their recovery. Dengue often causes high fever, joint pain, and fatigue, so maintaining hydration is crucial. While clear fluids like water, oral rehydration solutions, and clear soups are key for keeping your brother hydrated, a regular balanced diet is important too. Blan foods like rice can be effective since they’re gentle on the stomach - plain rice or rice porridge with light seasoning is fine. Likewise, he can have boiled or lightly seasoned vegetables; think along the lines of carrots or spinach, both are nutrient-rich and easy to digest. Protein sources like well-cooked chicken or fish can help maintain strength, though it’s essential these are not too greasy or spicy.

Fruits do have their benefits; papaya, in particular, is often recommended since some studies suggest it might help increase platelet levels, which can decrease during dengue fever. Fruits like bananas, apples, and guavas can be good options too as they are easy on the stomach and can help replenish energy. Avoid foods that are high in fat or oil, very spicy or heavily processed, as these can tax the digestive system more than helpful. Also be cautious with foods high in sugar as they don’t provide lasting energy or the nutrients needed at this time.

While food is important for recovery, don’t push him to eat large meals. Small, regular meals and snacks might be more manageable if his appetite is unstable. It sounds like his strength is a concern, so keep a close eye on his fluid intake and look for signs of dehydration or worsening symptoms, like severe abdominal pain or bleeding, which would need urgent medical attention. Stick to the basics of hydration and light, nutritious meals, and he’s likely to recover with time. Make sure to follow up with his healthcare provider for specific personalized guidance.
