does dengue cause weight loss

Ishaan

I am worried about my recent health issues and really need some advice. About two weeks ago, I came down with a fever, and after a few days of just feeling horrible, I found out it was dengue. The symptoms were terrible—like headaches, body aches, and this awful fatigue. But what’s bothering me the most is that I've lost quite a bit of weight since then. I mean, I can tell my clothes are getting loose, and my friends have even noticed. Now I’m wondering, does dengue cause weight loss? Like, is this a common thing? I usually don’t have issues with my weight, so this feels really strange and unsettling. I've tried to eat what I can, but honestly, I don’t have much appetite at all. Is it normal for dengue to mess with your metabolism or something? I’ve heard stories from people who've had dengue and they all talk about feeling weak and losing weight... but I didn't think it would happen to me this way. Should I be concerned about the weight loss, or is this just something like a temporary symptom that will go away as I recover? Trying to figure out what’s normal or if I should be doing something different. Any insights would be so appreciated!

Doctors' responses

Dengue can indeed cause weight loss, and it’s relatively common for people affected by the virus to experience this symptom. The illness triggers a range of symptoms such as fever, severe headaches, joint and muscle pain, and overwhelming fatigue—all of which can contribute to a decrease in appetite and thus, unintentional weight loss. During the acute phase of dengue, the body’s heightened metabolic demand coupled with reduced food intake often results in noticeable weight changes.

While this weight loss is usually temporary and tends to resolve as the infection subsides, there are a few things to keep an eye on. It’s essential to maintain hydration, as dengue often leads to dehydration due to fever and reduced fluid intake. Drinking plenty of fluids—water, oral rehydration solutions, or clear soups—can help manage this. While your appetite might be lacking, try to encourage small, frequent meals that are nutrient-rich to support your recovery. Simple, easy-to-digest foods like bananas, rice, or lean proteins might be beneficial.

If the weight loss becomes significant or if you’re finding it tough to maintain adequate nutrition and hydration, it might be prudent to consult a healthcare provider. They can evaluate your current nutritional status and offer more detailed support tailored to your condition. Also, keep an eye out for any red-flag symptoms that might indicate complications, like persistent vomiting, abdominal pain, or any signs of bleeding, and seek immediate medical attention if they occur. While weight loss can be unsettling, focusing on a gradual return to normal eating habits and ensuring sufficient hydration will typically aid in a complete recovery.
