loss of weight

Saanvi

I am struggling with this sudden loss of weight, and I really don't know what to think anymore. I was a perfectly healthy guy, maintaining my weight after working out regularly. But then outta nowhere, I started dropping weight—like, 15 pounds in two months! At first, I thought maybe it’s just stress from work or something, but now I'm getting really worried. I've been feeling pretty fatigued too, and my appetite is just—well, it's kinda all over the place. I’ll feel hungry one minute, then nauseous the next. I tried to keep my diet the same, but it just feels like my body is outta sync. I went to my doctor, and they ran some tests, but everything came back normal. They mentioned possible thyroid issues, but those results were fine. I just don’t understand where this loss of weight is coming from! Can it be something else? Anyone else ever have this weirdness with loss of weight and not know why? I mean, sure, losing a few pounds was nice at first, but now I'm worried this isn’t just a “normal” thing anymore. Anything anyone can suggest?

Doctors' responses

A sudden, unexplained loss of weight like yours certainly warrants a deeper dive, especially when coupled with symptoms like fatigue and fluctuating appetite. Since your thyroid function returned normal and your initial tests didn’t reveal anything, there are several other potential factors or conditions to consider. First, let’s ensure we’ve ruled out common causes. Gastrointestinal issues such as IBD (inflammatory bowel disease), celiac disease, or even a chronic infection could cause such symptoms. It’s worth discussing these possibilities with your doctor to see if further tests might help. Another possible area to explore is your metabolic rate; sometimes, metabolic disorders aren’t immediately obvious without specific tests. Also, it’s prudent to consider mental health aspects. Stress, anxiety, or depressive conditions can considerably impact your appetite and weight, even if they don’t present as typical mood symptoms. Noting other life changes that might coincide with your weight loss can give hints. It might sound mundane, but keeping a consistent food and symptom diary could help trace patterns or triggers in your diet and lifestyle that fueled these changes. Additionally, revisit your workout routines—an increase in physical activity or intensity could surprise the body by burning more calories than expected. If these avenues are exhausted without results, seeking a consultation with a specialist like an endocrinologist or a gastroenterologist might provide more targeted insights. Finally, do ensure you keep regular follow-ups with your healthcare provider to monitor changes as they occur. While some weight fluctuation can be normal, the persistence and scale of your loss along with accompanying symptoms deserve more exploration to prevent potential underlying issues from going unnoticed.
