what to avoid in dengue

Divya

I am finding myself in a tough spot. My brother just got diagnosed with dengue, and I’m really worried about him. He was just feeling tired and had some fever for a few days which didn’t seem too serious at first. But, then he developed this rash and the doctor said it’s dengue. I’ve heard a lot about what to avoid in dengue but honestly, I'm confused. Like, should he be avoiding certain foods or drinks? I've heard things about not having any painkillers like aspirin because of bleeding risks—what else should we be looking out for? Also, someone said he should avoid strenuous activities to not stress his body too much. Is that true? I mean, he already looked pretty weak, and I just don’t know what to do. Is there stuff we should definitely not let him have or do? Even the whole hydration thing is confusing, like how much fluid is okay? I’m just trying to wrap my head around what to avoid in dengue so I can support him properly. Ugh, I get so overwhelmed with all this info out there! Any advice from you all would be super helpful!

When dealing with dengue, it’s crucial to focus on what to avoid to help manage the condition effectively and prevent complications. You’re right about avoiding painkillers like aspirin and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen, as they can increase the risk of bleeding. For pain relief or to reduce fever, paracetamol (acetaminophen) is generally safe, but always follow the dosage guidelines recommended by a healthcare provider. Strenuous activities should indeed be avoided. Dengue can cause significant fatigue and weakness on its own, and his body needs rest to recuperate. Engaging in strenuous activities might strain his system further, especially given the risk of dengue affecting platelet counts and causing bleeding issues. As for hydration, it’s a critical aspect. Encourage regular intake of fluids like oral rehydration solutions, fresh fruit juices (without added sugar), coconut water, and clean drinking water. These help in maintaining electrolyte balance and prevent dehydration, which can exacerbate symptoms. However, don’t overload the body with fluids in a short time span; it’s about consistent intake throughout the day. In terms of diet, there aren’t specific foods to strictly avoid, but it’s good to steer clear of oily, fatty, or processed foods that can be harder to digest. Focus on a balanced, nutrient-rich diet that supports his immune system, like fruits, vegetables, and easy-to-digest proteins. He might not have much appetite, so smaller, more frequent meals might be more manageable. Also, monitor for any warning signs like severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, or bleeding from gums or nose, which require immediate medical attention as they could indicate dengue progressing to a more severe stage. Always coordinate with his healthcare provider for specific, individualized advice.
