Struggling with mobility after transverse myelitis can be a frustrating and challenging experience. Transverse myelitis leads to inflammation of the spinal cord, which can affect nerve signals to the legs, contributing to difficulty with movement like you describe. It’s common to have fluctuations in symptom severity as the central nervous system adjusts and continues to heal. Regular physiotherapy focusing on strength, flexibility, and coordination is essential to support recovery. Work with a physical therapist who can tailor exercises specifically to improve leg movement and core stability, which helps with balance and reducing abnormal movement of the waist when walking. Occupational therapy may also help to adapt daily activities to your current physical capabilities, minimizing further strain or discomfort. It’s crucial to stay on top of your regular follow-up appointments with your neurologist or primary care physician to monitor progress and adjust treatment as needed. They may check for any underlying issues like spasticity, which could worsen symptoms, and may recommend muscle relaxants or other medications to manage it. Make sure your overall health is in check – proper hydration, balanced nutrition, sleep, and stress management can all positively influence your recovery. If you notice any urgent red-flag symptoms, like sudden loss of bladder or bowel control, intense new pain, or rapidly worsening weakness, seek immediate medical advice. Consistent communication with your healthcare provider is important for adjusting your treatment plan and addressing any new concerns promptly.
