lung problems symptoms

Aadhyant

I am really worried because my dad has started to show some strange lung problems symptoms that just seem to get worse. He’s 68, so I guess I should’ve expected some issues but man, this seems off. A month ago, he just had a bit of wheezing when he went for his afternoon walks, thought it was just maybe getting old or allergies but then he started coughing more, especially at night, and it sounds really dry. He’s never been a smoker which is good, right? But his breathing feels really labored and sometimes it looks like he’s struggling. And don’t even get me started on the tightness in his chest – like he just can’t catch his breath after going up stairs or even just talking for too long. My mom’s been saying it could just be seasonal allergies and maybe he just needs something simple, but all these lung problems symptoms.. I just don’t know. We went to his normal doctor, and they did some tests but all I got was a “wait and see” kinda vibe. Should I be pushing for more tests, like a scan or something? I read that lung problems symptoms can be really tricky, and it kinda scares me. Am I overthinking this, or should I be really concerned?

Doctors' responses

Lung symptoms like wheezing, coughing, or breathing difficulty should definitely be taken seriously, especially when they persist or worsen over time. It’s encouraging that your dad isn’t a smoker, reducing his risk for some common lung conditions, but these symptoms still need careful attention. The wheezing, nighttime coughing, chest tightness, and shortness of breath are indeed red-flag symptoms. Given his age and the progression of these symptoms, pushing for further evaluation is a prudent step. You might consider asking his doctor for a thorough pulmonary assessment, which could include spirometry to check for obstructive or restrictive lung diseases. Imaging like a chest X-ray or CT scan might also help identify structural problems, infections, or signs of chronic conditions like COPD or even an early stage of heart disease, which can present similar symptoms. Monitoring for any additional signs such as fever, weight loss, or fatigue is important as they might indicate issues like a respiratory infection or something more systemic. While seasonal allergies could contribute to his symptoms, these typically don’t involve breathlessness and are generally responsive to over-the-counter antihistamines or nasal sprays. It’s good to be cautious and advocate for further testing if things feel off. Reassessing lifestyle factors such as exposure to potential allergens or irritants is wise too. If there’s any sudden worsening, or if he experiences significant pain or distress with breathing, it’s critical to seek immediate medical attention. Keep advocating for your dad’s health, your instincts are right on point.
