Doctors' responses

You are not sick, this is a known and common SSRI side effect. It usually improves with time, but your doctor can help adjust the dose or add a small medicine to control sweating if it becomes too bothersome.

Don’t stop these medicines abruptly.

While it’s understandable that you’ve noticed increased sweating after starting SSRIs or antidepressants, this can indeed be a common side effect of these medications. SSRIs, or selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, sometimes influence the function of the autonomic nervous system, which may lead to excessive sweating, also known as hyperhidrosis. Both medication and other factors could contribute to this, such as lifestyle changes or other medical conditions. Because you’ve only been on these medications for a month, your body might still be adjusting to them. It’s crucial to determine whether the excessive sweating is solely due to the medication or if any other factors might be playing a role. It would be helpful to keep track of when the sweating occurs, and if there’s any pattern connected to specific activities or changes in your environment. More importantly, discuss this side effect with your prescribing doctor. They may assess whether a dosage adjustment is necessary, or if switching to a different antidepressant with a lesser likelihood of causing sweating might be beneficial. In the meantime, stay hydrated and wear breathable clothing to manage the discomfort of sweating. Also, avoid triggers like hot drinks or spicy foods that might worsen the situation. If the sweating becomes debilitating or accompanied by other concerning symptoms, it becomes imperative to seek immediate medical attention, as your treatment regimen might need reevaluation to ensure both efficacy and tolerability for your condition.

Hello Harshil, I understand your worry. See SSRIs can cause this commonly. But you need a physical consultation to make sure everything is fine. So kindly visit your doctor and discuss with them. If you can’t visit, try to have a telephonic conversation.

Hello Harshil By going through your history and evaluation of your health status I must say that nothing to Worry about it because excessive sweating (also called hyperhidrosis) is a known side effect of many SSRIs and other antidepressants. These medications can affect the way your body regulates temperature and sweat production, even when you’re not physically active.

What you can do: - Monitor: If the sweating is mild and you’re otherwise feeling okay, it’s usually not dangerous. - Stay cool: Wear light clothing, use fans, and keep your room cool. - Talk to your doctor: If the sweating is severe, bothersome, or comes with other symptoms (like fever, palpitations, or weight loss), let your doctor know. They may adjust your medication or suggest ways to manage the side effect.

Thank you
