permanent acne treatment - #20829

Vihaan

I am really struggling with my skin lately, and I don’t know what to do about it. It feels like I've tried every single product or routine out there for like permanent acne treatment, but nothing works! I've had acne since I was in high school, and now it just seems to have gotten worse as I got older. I mean, I thought it was supposed to get better, right? The stuff I put on my face doesn't seem to help, and I still have those red, inflamed spots all over. I went to a dermatologist last month, and she prescribed me some pills, but I’ve read a lot about permanent acne treatment options online that sound way better. I just don’t know if they’re legit! It’s exhausting to constantly deal with this, I feel like it's controlling my life. Sometimes I avoid social events because I don't want people to see my face. What do you guys recommend for permanent acne treatment? Anyone tried anything that really works? I really just want to feel confident in my own skin again, can a permanent acne treatment really help me achieve that?

Doctors' responses

When dealing with persistent acne, frustration is understandable, especially if past treatments haven’t brought the relief you were hoping for. A comprehensive approach is key, which targets the roots of the problem, such as excess oil production, bacteria, clogged pores, and inflammation. Given your experience with a dermatologist, it wouldn’t be out of line to reassess the current treatment plan, especially if it’s not yielding expected results. Sometimes, oral medications such as isotretinoin (Accutane) are recommended for severe cases, as they address multiple causes of acne by reducing oil production drastically and altering skin cell turnover. Although potent, this drug requires careful monitoring for potential side effects, and discussing this option with your dermatologist would be crucial. Alternatively, hormone-related acne can be managed with certain oral contraceptives or spironolactone, a medication that blocks androgen effects leading to acne. If topical products aren’t working, it’s worth examining whether prescription topicals like tretinoin or adapalene could better suit your needs. These work by promoting skin cell turnover and reducing inflammation. Procedures like chemical peels, laser therapy, or light therapy can be adjunct options but usually need to be considered after other treatments are trialed and are often repeated to maintain results. Consistency remains important in any regimen; sudden changes, mixing too many products, or overuse can often lead to irritation rather than improvement. Modifying lifestyle factors such as diet, stress levels, and skin care habits could play a supportive role, while trying to understand and manage triggers like dairy, high-glycemic foods, and stress might help. Be cautious with online claims about ‘permanent’ solutions as they can sometimes lead to hype more than results. For genuine long-lasting outcomes, an ongoing dialogue with a healthcare provider will allow for adjustments to your treatment as your skin and circumstances evolve. If your current specialist isn’t addressing your concerns or you feel misunderstood, seeking a second opinion from another dermatologist might provide fresh insights.
