Doctors’ responses
Ulcerative colitis isn’t considered curable in the traditional sense, but it can certainly be managed effectively with the goal to reduce symptoms and maintain remission. Your current medication regimen including mesalamine is a common treatment to help control inflammation in the colon. It’s good to hear you’ve been doing okay, but experiencing diarrhea and weakness indicates that some degree of inflammation might still be present. Long-term management involves closely monitoring your symptoms and adjusting your medication under your healthcare provider’s guidance. Besides medication, lifestyle factors play an essential role. Keeping stress levels down can help since stress has been known to trigger flare-ups for some individuals. Diet modifications might also be necessary; while there isn’t a one-size-fits-all diet for all ulcerative colitis patients, avoiding high-residue foods like nuts and raw veggies during flares could be beneficial. It’s worth discussing with a dietitian or your gastroenterologist to tailor a diet plan to your needs. You might also want to check if you’re experiencing medication side effects or if you need a reassessment of your blood levels to rule out anemia or other deficiencies responsible for weakness. If symptoms persist or worsen, it might be time for a re-evaluation by your doctor, who might consider additional treatments, such as corticosteroids for acute flares, or immune-modulating therapy for long-term management. Although a completely cure isn’t currently available, many individuals manage to live full, active lives by closely monitoring and managing their condition with the right combination of lifestyle adjustments and medical treatment. Regular follow-ups are crucial to adapting treatment as necessary and identifying any complications early.
