improve kidney health - #18113

Fatima

I am really worried about my kidney health. For the past few months, I’ve been feeling more and more tired and have had some weird swelling in my ankles. A friend of mine told me that I should try to improve kidney health, so I’ve been trying to find ways to do that but it’s super confusing! I went to the doc and they did some blood tests, and even mentioned my creatinine levels are a bit high, which I guess isn’t good? They didn’t give me a clear guide on how to improve kidney health, just said to drink more water, but isn’t there more I can do? I’ve read about diets and stuff that can help improve kidney health but can anyone really recommend specific foods or things to avoid? oh and I really like my coffee, is that going to mess up my kidneys? Sometimes I feel like I’m overanalyzing everything but it’s just scary because my family has a history with kidney issues. I just want to be sure I do everything I can to improve kidney health before it gets worse! Any advice would be really helpful, thanks!

To improve kidney health, it’s crucial to address the underlying issues and adopt lifestyle modifications to reduce further strain on the kidneys. Since your creatinine levels are slightly elevated and given your family history, it’s important to take comprehensive steps. First, focus on maintaining good hydration; drinking adequate amounts of water can help, but avoid excessive intake as it might lead to imbalances, especially if there’s already decreased kidney function. Coffee in moderation is generally considered safe for healthy kidneys, but try to limit the intake to avoid dehydration effects related to caffeine. When it comes to diet, adopting a kidney-friendly diet is essential. Consuming foods low in sodium, phosphorus, and potassium can reduce kidney stress. This might mean limiting processed foods, certain dairy products, and choosing fresh vegetables over canned or packaged versions. An excellent approach would be to incorporate more fruits like apples, berries, and red grapes, which are beneficial. Protein needs to be moderated, as high levels of protein intake can further strain kidneys. Opt for healthy protein sources like fish, lean meats, or low-fat dairy, keeping portions controlled. Focus on maintaining a healthy weight through regular physical activity, aligned with your current health, to support overall kidney health. Also, controlling blood pressure and managing blood sugars are crucial steps, especially if you’re at risk for hypertension or diabetes. It’s beneficial to work with a dietitian for a personalized plan based on your specific blood work and needs. Regular follow-ups with your healthcare provider are vital to monitor kidney function progression through tests like eGFR and urine albumin. Stay alert for symptoms like increased swelling, changes in urination patterns, or persistent fatigue, and promptly communicate these with your doctor. Given your family’s history, these proactive measures can be significant in preventing the progression of kidney disease.
