can we eat curd rice during loose motion - #18182

Diya

I am just really confused about what to eat when I have loose motions. Last week, I got hit with a nasty stomach bug, and it made everything so uncomfortable. I was running to the loo like every hour, and honestly, it was exhausting. My grandma keeps saying that curd rice is super good for the stomach, but I’m not sure if I can eat curd rice during loose motion. Like, does curd rice help or make things worse? I tried plain rice and light soups, but the idea of curd rice is tempting because it's kind of comforting, you know? Plus, I read online that curd has probiotic stuff that could be good for my gut, however, I also heard that dairy can sometimes upset the stomach more. Can we eat curd rice during loose motion? I mean, is it ideal or should I stay away from dairy altogether? I don’t wanna make it worse. Just looking for some good advice here. It's really hard to figure out what to eat or drink when dealing with all this, and the last thing I want is to end up making it more havoc for my digestive system. Any thoughts?

Doctors' responses

Eating curd rice during loose motion can be beneficial in some cases, and here’s why. Curd, or yogurt, contains probiotics which are good bacteria that can help restore the balance of your gut flora. This can potentially be advantageous during episodes of diarrhea, as it might help normalize bowel function. However, the response to dairy can sometimes vary among people. If the loose motions are caused by lactose intolerance, dairy might exacerbate symptoms. Curd is generally well-tolerated even for those who are mildly lactose intolerant because it’s been fermented, reducing its lactose content. But caution is advised, especially if you notice any worsening of symptoms after consuming dairy products.

Combining curd with rice can be particularly soothing. The blandness of rice helps bulk up the stool, while the curd provides moisture and beneficial bacteria. Make sure the curd is fresh and not too sour, as overly fermented curd might irritate your gut further. It’s also important to keep it plain, without any spices or additives, which could irritate your digestive system. If you find you’re sensitive to dairy or if your symptoms immediately worsen after eating curd rice, it might be best to avoid it and stick to foods like plain rice, bananas, or boiled potatoes which are gentler.

In addition to dietary changes, make sure you stay well-hydrated. Oral rehydration solutions (ORS), coconut water, or clear broths can help maintain electrolyte balance and hydration. If your symptoms persist beyond a couple of days or if you experience severe dehydration signs like dizziness, dry mouth, or reduced urination, it would be wise to seek medical attention. These could signal a more serious underlying issue that needs prompt evaluation.
