surgery scar removal cream - #16591

Ayush

I am really struggling with the scars I have from surgery. About 6 months ago, I had to go under the knife for a pretty serious issue, and now I can't stop thinking about these ugly scars on my abdomen. I know they’re healing, but they look really red and raised still, it’s frustrating. I have been slathering on some moisturizer, hoping it helps, but honestly I'm not seeing much difference. I heard about surgery scar removal cream and I'm wondering if that’s what I should really be looking into. Like, are there specific types that are actually effective or do they all kinda do the same thing? I’ve seen some reviews online saying they work wonders, while others say they’re a waste of money. Plus, I've got a friend who says silicone gel or patches might be an option too, but I’m not really sure. Should I just stick with surgery scar removal cream, or is it worth it to explore other options? And how soon after surgery should you start using something like that? I really don’t wanna try something that could make it worse or delay healing. Any insights would be amazing!

When it comes to managing surgical scars, there are several options you can consider, each having varying degrees of effectiveness depending on the individual. Generally, over-the-counter scar removal creams can be helpful, but the type and timing are crucial. Specifically, look for those containing silicone, as they are often most recommended. Silicone-based treatments, whether in cream or gel sheet form, can be effective in reducing the redness and thickness of scars by providing a barrier that helps retain moisture and protect the skin. Silicone sheets or gels are particularly beneficial and have more extensive evidence backing their effectiveness, especially since the American Academy of Dermatology endorses their use.

It’s ideal to start using silicone products once the wound has completely healed — typically a few weeks post-surgery — and the sutures or staples have been removed. Starting too early might irritate the skin or interfere with natural healing. While moisturizers are good for general skin care, they might not sufficiently target scar tissue. You should apply silicone sheets or gel consistently, according to package instructions, often for at least 12 hours a day over several weeks for optimal results.

Investigate products and gather information from reliable medical sources or consult with a dermatologist or your surgeon for personal recommendations. Given that scars continue to mature and change over a year or longer after the surgery, it’s early days yet, and patience is key. Though no treatment completely removes scars, combining silicone products with strategies like sun protection (to avoid scar pigmentation) and avoiding tension on the scar can improve appearance. Stay clear from applying any over-the-counter treatments on an open wound, and discontinue any product if it causes irritation.
