how to control heart beat fast - #20789

Advika

I am feeling really worried these days because I’ve been having some episodes where I can’t seem to slow my heart rate down. Just a few days ago, I was just sitting on my couch, watching TV, when all of a sudden, my heart started racing like crazy. I mean, it felt like I just finished a marathon, and I was just chilling! At first, I thought maybe I was just anxious or something, but then it kinda kept happening. I tried deep breathing, but I’m not sure how to control heart beat fast in those moments. I went to see my doctor, and they did some tests, but everything came back normal. They mentioned it might be stress or something, but I still feel in the dark about how to control heart beat fast when it starts up again. Sometimes it lasts for a few minutes, other times it feels like an eternity. Anyone know any tips on how to control heart beat fast, or if there are specific remedies or exercises that might help? I don’t wanna be freaking out every time it happens! Thanks!

Doctors' responses

When you experience episodes of rapid heart rate, it’s essential to evaluate all possible factors and be aware of techniques to manage it effectively and safely within the context of everyday life. Since your doctor has already ruled out major cardiac issues, this could indeed be a manifestation of stress, anxiety, or even a misalignment of electrolytes. One practical approach is to continue with the deep breathing but make sure it’s paced properly – inhale through your nose slowly for a count of four, hold the breath for a moment, and then exhale gently through your mouth for a count of six. Repeat this for several cycles until you notice a calm settling over your heart rate.

Additionally, paying attention to your hydration and electrolyte balance may help; you might benefit from maintaining a diet that’s rich in potassium and magnesium, like bananas, leafy greens, and nuts. Regular physical activity also aids in regulating your autonomic nervous system, which can help in keeping episodes less frequent. Incorporating gentle exercises like yoga or tai chi can be potent in modulating stress response. Importantly, if your rapid heart rate episodes become more frequent, longer, or are accompanied by other symptoms like chest pain, lightheadedness, fainting, or shortness of breath, it’s wise to report back to your healthcare provider as these may indicate a more serious condition needing further investigation or intervention. Consider keeping a log of each episode, noting down the duration, associated activities, and any possible triggers to help your doctor with further assessments if needed.
