aloe vera for scars - #20887

Rashi

I am really frustrated because for the past few months, I've been dealing with some pretty ugly scars from an old injury. I had this accident while biking, and despite healing mostly, these scars just won't budge. A friend mentioned using aloe vera for scars, saying it worked wonders for her after a surgery. I was like okay, I should try that! But here’s the thing — I’ve looked into aloe vera for scars, and there are so many mixed opinions online. Some say it helps, others claim it does nothing at all. I've tried applying pure aloe vera gel directly from the plant every day, but I’m not seeing any difference yet. Is it normal for it to take time before I notice anything? I even considered other products that have aloe vera for scars, but what if those don't work either? Like, am I wasting time and money? Also, are there specific types of scars that aloe vera works better on, like keloids or just regular discoloration? I really need some guidance here because it's getting kinda discouraging!

Using aloe vera for scars can be somewhat hit or miss, largely because the effectiveness can vary depending on the type of scar and individual skin differences. Aloe vera does have anti-inflammatory and moisturizing properties which theoretically can help with wound healing and maybe influence scar appearance somewhat. It’s known more for soothing the skin, than for significantly reducing scars. Scars, whether they are hypertrophic or keloid, or just discoloration, are complex and their appearance can be influenced by factors like genetics, skin type, and even your age. When you’re talking about hypertrophic or keloid scars, those are often more difficult to treat and might require medical interventions like steroid injections, laser therapy, or silicone sheets, which have more robust evidence backing their effectiveness. Pure aloe vera will generally aid more in making the skin feel better rather than change the scar substantially. It’s not unusual for any noticeable improvements to take weeks to months; but if a few months of consistent use haven’t offered any change, it’s time to think about other options. Over-the-counter scar creams containing silicone or even ingredients like onion extract might be worth considering as well. When using these, apply twice daily as directed, and assess after several weeks. Consult with a dermatologist if the scars are particularly bothersome. It’s also worth ensuring that you’re protecting your scars from the sun, as UV exposure can darken them further, use a good broad-spectrum sunscreen when you’re outside. Ultimately, scar management is often multi-faceted, and sometimes a combined approach is the most practical way forward.
