gastrointestinal infection medicine - #20926

Rhea

I am dealing with this awful stomach issue for like two weeks now and I think it might be a gastrointestinal infection. I’m not sure tho, coz I thought it was just a bug and I'd feel better after a couple days – but nope! The cramps are brutal, and I'm running to the bathroom way too often. I went to my doc last week, and they said to try some over-the-counter stuff but it’s not really helping. I mean, I'm wondering if I need actual gastrointestinal infection medicine, or if there’s something stronger to clear this up faster? My friend said they had a similar issue and antibiotics worked wonders for them, but now I’m afraid of messing up my gut flora or whatever. I got blood tests done, but the results take ages! How do I know if I should just wait this out or push for better gastrointestinal infection medicine? Like, at what point should I really be worried or ask for more treatment options? Any advice would be super helpful, thank you! plus I’m also kinda weirded out, I haven’t been able to eat much without feeling queasy, it’s freaking me out!

Doctors' responses

In situations where a gastrointestinal infection is suspected and symptoms persist beyond the typical duration, which is often 2-3 days, it’s essential to consider a few key aspects. Firstly, it’s crucial to determine if the infection is viral, bacterial, or related to another cause, as each may require different approaches. Viral infections usually don’t need antibiotics and tend to resolve with adequate rest and hydration. If the symptoms are severe or persistent, as in your case, it’s possible we might be dealing with a bacterial infection, which sometimes could benefit from antibiotic therapy. However, it’s not advisable to start antibiotics without confirmation, since improper use can indeed affect your gut flora and lead to antibiotic resistance.

Waiting for your blood test results can help your doctor understand what might be going on. You may want to discuss the potential for a stool culture or further diagnostic testing, which can pinpoint specific pathogens and guide more targeted treatment. Also, keep an eye on warning signs like high fever, blood in stools, or severe dehydration signs like decreased urination, dizziness or feeling faint — any of these would warrant more immediate medical attention.

In the meantime, maintaining hydration is crucial, especially if you’re experiencing diarrhea or vomiting. Oral rehydration solutions can be helpful in maintaining electrolyte balance. For dietary management, try small, bland meals – like rice, bananas, and toast – and avoid dairy, caffeine, and alcohol as these could exacerbate your symptoms. If you notice your symptoms turning worse, like persistent pain or inability to keep fluids down, it’s important to reach out to your healthcare provider promptly for further evaluation and management.

Your situation can be distressing, particularly when considering the balance of effective treatment versus side effects. Targeted treatment decisions, based on accurate diagnosis and guided by your recent tests, will ensure the best course of action without unnecessary intervention. Your healthcare provider can assist in determining if additional intervention, like antibiotics, is necessary or whether supportive care will suffice.
