Acne can indeed be frustrating, especially when it seems resistant to treatment. One possibility to consider is whether there’s an underlying issue that’s been missed, like hormonal imbalances, which is common in persistent cases. It’s good that you’re already trying dermatologist-recommended treatments and a healthy diet—these are key steps. However, since it’s been persistent, it might be worthwhile to talk to a healthcare professional about the possibility of investigating hormonal factors; especially if you’ve noticed any other symptoms such as irregular menstrual cycles (in females), significant weight loss/gain, or excess hair growth. Sometimes, conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) can contribute to acne.

Moreover, it’s important to ensure proper usage of the medications you’re already prescribed. Topical treatments typically include benzoyl peroxide, retinoids, or salicylic acid, and they can take several weeks to show improvement. For some, oral medications like antibiotics, hormonal treatments (e.g., oral contraceptives), or isotretinoin might be recommended by a healthcare provider if topicals are insufficient. Avoid overloading with too many products as it can cause irritation leading to worsening of acne. Maintain a gentle skincare routine: cleansing twice daily with a mild cleanser, followed by non-comedogenic moisturizers. Stay aware of any particular products that could be aggravating your acne and consider simplifying your routine to identify triggers. Also, avoid touching your face or picking at your acne to prevent scarring and infection. If available, your dermatologist might also suggest physical treatments like laser therapy or chemical peels as adjunct therapies. Remember, sometimes lifestyle changes in stress management and ensuring adequate sleep can also benefit your skin. Since your current plan isn’t working, a follow-up with a dermatologist to adjust the treatment plan may be crucial.
