Yeast infection very frequently - #10926

A

Whenever I smoke weed, I get yeast infection immediately after 2 days. I know there's no correlation but it has happened 6 to 7 times. I have been noticing this pattern very frequently. I have never gotten yeast infection in my entire life except the time I have started smoking. I'd like to know what's causing the issue and what tests should I take?

Doctors' responses

While it’s not well-established that smoking weed directly causes yeast infections, there might be indirect factors contributing to this pattern. Stressing your body’s immune system with any new habit, such as smoking, could potentially alter your microbiome or affect your body’s natural defenses, making it more susceptible to yeast overgrowth. Additionally, if smoking affects your behavior in ways that reduce hygiene or changes your diet, these might also contribute to yeast infections. To address the root cause, considering both objective tests and lifestyle evaluation would be the next logical steps. First, it’s worth assessing if there’s any underlying condition that might make you more prone to infections. You could start with a visit to your primary care physician who may recommend a vaginal swab test to rule out other infections and confirm the presence of Candida, the fungus responsible for yeast infections. Your doctor might also check your blood sugar levels to exclude diabetes or prediabetes, as high glucose levels can increase risk. It’s also prudent to evaluate lifestyle factors—hydration, diet, stress, and hygiene practices, including intimate hygiene products used. Even factors like wearing tight clothing can trap moisture and heat, promoting yeast growth. If irritation or other symptoms persist or worsen, consider eliminating cannabis use for a period to see if this changes the frequency of occurrences. Keep track of any dietary changes too, as some may inadvertently aggravate yeast growth. However, if yeast infections don’t improve or you exhibit systemic symptoms, seek further medical advice to explore less common causes.
