How to reduce diarrhea its been 2 months - #10989

Obsa Yosef

I had diarrhea and vomiting. I went to the hospital and they gave me this medicine, called 'Ephasol'. For 10 days, take 2 in the morning and 2 in the evening. Now, take 1 in the morning and 1 in the evening. Then, for 10 days, they told me to take only 1 in the morning and 1 in the evening. And when I finished taking the medicine, it came back. What should I do?

Doctors’ responses

If you’ve had diarrhea for two months and it recurred after completing your medication, it’s crucial to reassess the underlying cause. Although Ephasol might have provided temporary relief, its insufficient if the root problem isn’t resolved. First, it’s important to revisit your healthcare provider for further evaluation. Persisting diarrhea could be due to various causes such as infections (bacterial, viral, parasites), inflammatory bowel disease, irritable bowel syndrome, or even dietary intolerance like lactose or gluten. Detailed history-taking, physical exam, and possibly lab tests such as stool analysis (for infections, and inflammation markers) or blood tests may be necessary. This can help identify any specific pathogens, rule out celiac disease, or check for inflammatory markers pointing to conditions like Crohn’s or ulcerative colitis. Meanwhile, maintaining hydration is key. Consuming electrolyte solutions or oral rehydration salts can prevent dehydration. Avoiding alcohol, caffeine, and fatty or spicy foods might help reduce symptoms. If lactose or gluten intolerance is suspected, cutting out dairy or gluten could be beneficial, but only attempt this under medical supervision. Probiotics could also be advantageous in restoring your gut flora, but it’s best to discuss appropriate strains and dosages with your doctor. If severe symptoms like blood in stools, fever, weight loss, or severe abdominal pain develop, it’s essential to seek immediate medical attention, as these may indicate more serious conditions requiring urgent treatment.
