Doctors’ responses

Dr. Bharat Joshi
I’m a periodontist and academician with a strong clinical and teaching background. Over the last 4 years and 8 months, I’ve been actively involved in dental education, guiding students at multiple levels including dental hygienist, BDS, and MDS programs. Currently, I serve as a Reader at MMCDSR in Ambala, Haryana—a role that allows me to merge my academic passion with hands-on experience. Clinically, I’ve been practicing dentistry for the past 12 years. From routine procedures like scaling and root planing to more advanced cases involving grafts, biopsies, and implant surgeries. Honestly, I still find joy in doing a simple RCT when it’s needed. It’s not just about the procedure but making sure the patient feels comfortable and safe. Academically, I have 26 research publications to my credit. I’m on the editorial boards of the Archives of Dental Research and Journal of Dental Research and Oral Health, and I’ve spent a lot of time reviewing manuscripts—from case reports to meta-analyses and even book reviews. I was honored to receive the “Best Editor” award by Innovative Publications, and Athena Publications recognized me as an “excellent reviewer,” which honestly came as a bit of a surprise! In 2025, I had the opportunity to present a guest lecture in Italy on traumatic oral lesions. Sharing my work and learning from peers globally has been incredibly fulfilling. Outside academics and clinics, I’ve also worked in the pharmaceutical sector as a Drug Safety Associate for about 3 years, focusing on pharmacovigilance. That role really sharpened my attention to detail and deepened my understanding of drug interactions and adverse effects. My goal is to keep learning, and give every patient and student my absolute best.

Long-term redness, itching, and swelling at the tip of the penis can indicate several possible conditions. One common cause is balanitis, which is inflammation of the glans. This could be due to infection, an allergic reaction, or irritation. Since it’s been going on for four months, it’s important to seek a proper diagnosis to rule out specific infections like a fungal infection or other STIs. Coconut oil might soothe itching, but if the cause is fungal, it won’t resolve it. Regular washing is good hygiene, but using overly abrasive soaps or not fairly drying can also cause irritation. Consider using water-based washes without fragrances or harsh chemicals. If a fungal infection such as Candida is the cause, over-the-counter antifungal creams might help, but you should check with a healthcare provider for an appropriate recommendation. Antifungal treatments should usually be continued for a period even after symptoms disappear to ensure complete eradication. If it’s an allergic reaction or dermatitis, it’s important to identify and avoid the irritant, which could be in soaps, lotions, or even laundry detergents. Occasionally, this might require a prescription-strength oral or topical medication to reduce inflammation and manage symptoms. Since this could potentially be a persistent or complex issue, it’s best to get evaluated by a healthcare professional who can conduct an examination, possibly recommend some tests like a skin swab, and tailor a specific treatment plan based on the root cause of your symptoms. If discharge, severe bruising, or an open sore occurs, seeking immediate medical attention is advisable as these could indicate a more serious issue.
