Liver pain symptoms - #11839

Vihaan

I am feeling really worried about this pain I’ve been having in my right side, like maybe under my rib cage or something. It started a couple weeks ago but was kinda mild, just felt like a dull ache. I thought maybe I pulled a muscle or something, but now it’s getting harder to ignore. The other day, I had this weird sensation like pressure, and my stomach just felt off. I've been feeling kinda nauseous too—like I can’t eat much without feeling sick. I did some Googling (I know, probably not the best idea), and I stumbled across liver pain symptoms. They mentioned stuff like fatigue and yellowing of the skin – which freaked me out because I noticed my eyes seemed a little yellowish, but I'm not sure if I'm just overthinking. I had a few drinks last weekend, but I don't consider myself a heavy drinker. I don’t want to jump to conclusions, but what are liver pain symptoms exactly? Like how severe do they usually get? Do I need to be super concerned, or is this something that could resolve on its own? I haven’t seen a doctor yet, but I'm just trying to understand if I should panic or if this is normal. Any advice on what to look for or what I should do?

Doctors’ responses

It’s understandable to feel concerned about the symptoms you’re experiencing, especially with that combination of pain in your right side, nausea, and the yellowish tinge in your eyes. These could be indicative of liver-related issues—liver pain often manifests as discomfort in the upper right abdomen, where the liver is located. Fatigue, nausea, and jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes) are also common symptoms associated with liver conditions. The yellowing happens due to a buildup of bilirubin, a substance that the liver normally processes. While occasional discomfort might not be alarming, the presence of several symptoms, especially jaundice, suggests that you should see a healthcare provider promptly for a thorough evaluation. They might perform blood tests to check liver enzyme levels and imaging studies like an ultrasound to assess your liver’s condition.

You mentioned alcohol consumption, and even if you’re not a heavy drinker, it could contribute to liver issues like fatty liver disease or more acute conditions, particularly if there’s a family history or other risk factors involved. However, liver pain and associated symptoms can also arise from infections, metabolic disorders, or gallbladder problems, which share similar symptom profiles, hence why professional medical evaluation is crucial. Till you see a doctor, avoid alcohol, stay hydrated, and try to maintain a balanced diet, but don’t delay setting up an appointment. If symptoms worsen or if you experience severe pain, confusion, or significant yellowing, these are red flags, and you should seek immediate medical attention. The underlying cause needs to be addressed promptly to prevent more serious complications.
